If you like beautiful sunrises, spectacular sunsets,
magnificent canyons, quiet open spaces and want to see
what Georgia O'Keeffe saw, painted where Georgia O'Keeffe
painted and have the fellowship of like minded artists,
join gail Mcdaniel in a rare opportunity to paint the
Southwest.
gail will be taking only 20 artists to Ghost Ranch, so
it is important to sign up now. This area of North America
has become a haven for artists. Just as the Impressionist's
were drawn to the Provence area of France, artists today
are drawn to this area of New Mexico, to live and paint.
There are two reasons for this: (1) This area has the
same light as Provence and (2) the same colors as Provence.
To learn more about Ghost Ranch visit their web site:
www.ghostranch.org.
While visiting the site, click on the "Who We Are"
page, and on that page click on "Our History and
Georgia O'Keeffe".
The Workshop cost for artists is $675.00. This includes
room, board and tuition. For non-painting guests the cost
is $330.00. Your room will be a shared room with a connecting
bath to another shared room. It is important to remember
that in each room there is a sink. The sinks are not in
the bathrooms.
Ghost Ranch (6,850 feet elevation) has 21,000 acres and
is a conference center owned and operated by the Presbyterian
Church. On an inspection trip in November 2001, gail and
Ken, her husband, found a super-friendly, helpful staff.
The facilities are rustic, but very clean, sparten, but
quite comfortable. gail and Ken describe the food as healthy,
wholesome, hearty, institutional gourmet camp food. Rebecca,
who is head of the kitchen, has been at the ranch for
25 years. She is very personable. gail and Ken enjoyed
visiting with Rebecca while having breakfast in the Ranch
Dining Hall. Rebecca is aware of dietary needs certain
people have and wants to meet those needs. The Dining
Hall is a large, warm, inviting place, good for lots of
early morning fellowship with hot coffee or herbal teas,
as you wait for the 7:30 AM serving of breakfast.
There will be painting in the Studio and plein air. The
workshop itself will be Tuesday, September 17th, through
Saturday, September 21st. There are wonderful vistas in
every direction to stir your creative juices. Plein air
opportunities are many. Hiking the trails for painting
locations is an option. Thirteen miles from the Ranch
is Christ in The Desert Monastery. By planning
ahead, plein air can be there. On the way to the Monastery
you cross the Rio Charna. This river crossing is a wonderful
place for painting. Transportation will be provided. You
will be allowed to fix your own snack lunch in the kitchen
for these painting excursions. All this and much more
is available for plein air every day.
Friday is a day off to visit the area. Taos is an hour
away. Chimayo is on the high road to Taos, between Santa
Fe and Taos. To quote The Travelsmart Newletter, December
15, 2001, Las Vegas, NM has "been described as an
'outdoor museum of frontier architecture' and with good
reason - it has 918 buildings on the National Register
of Historic Places. The Old Town has one of the largest
and best preserved Spanish Plazas in the State."
See the Las Vegas web site: www.lasvegasnewmexico.com.
Santa Fe (as described by AAA in 1994) "has the third
largest flea market on the planet," and is about
an hour and 15 minutes away. For $44.00 per person, minimum
of three persons, The Ranch Shuttle is available for a
round trip to Santa Fe. Five miles from Ghost Ranch is
lake fishing.
The 2002 Ghost Ranch Watercolor Adventure Workshop is
dedicated to Elaine Ford, of Brentwood, Tennessee. Elaine
is the reason gail is an art instructor today. Several
years ago Elaine told gail "If you ever start teaching
watercolor classes I want to study with you". gail
considered that a real compliment, coming from Elaine.
Elaine is an accomplished artist and as a photographer,
she is a national award winner. In 1993 one of Elaine's
photographs won first place in the national competition
of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Her winning
photograph, along with eleven other finalists, was then
hung in the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington,
D.C. From Elaine's mention of wanting to study with gail
has come the watercolor classes and workshop structure
that gail has in place today. From gail, "Thank
you, Elaine!"
The deposit, which reserves your space, is $125.00 for
each artist and guest. The balance for the Workshop is
due by June 1, 2002. After June 1, 2002, there can be
no refunds, unless there is a paying artist who will take
your place.
If flying, you fly into Albuquerque, NM. The Ghost Ranch
Shuttle is $63.00 round trip. If you are taking the Shuttle,
arrive on Monday, September 16th, as early in the day
as possible. At 2:30 PM, the shuttle leaves the airport.
On Sunday, September 22nd the shuttle leaves Ghost Ranch
at 8:30 AM with a 2 ½ hour drive to the airport.
Plan your return flight accordingly.
For additional information please call gail or Ken at
(615) 599-5115 between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM Central time.
Upon receipt of your deposit, you will be sent a registration
form.

The view from Ghost Ranch looking
South of Pedernal, the flat-topped mountain where Georgia
O'Keeffe's ashes were scattered. To quote from the Ghost
Ranch web site: "Pedernal....... was probably her
favorite subject. 'It's my private mountain,' she frequently
said, 'God told me if I painted it often enough I could
have it'".
