Dear Supporter of the Visual Arts:
In 2001, my husband (Ken) and I established The Students and Friends of gail Mcdaniel Award. Today the proceeds help visual art teachers buy much-needed visual art supplies for students in Davidson and Williamson County Public Schools. The generosity of individuals and companies in the area has been simply breathtaking. In 2008, $17,015.00 was raised through this program. Of that amount, $11,517.00 was awarded to 18 school teachers and $5,498.00 was donated to the PENCIL Foundations’ LP PENCIL Box, a supply store that provides free art supplies to area schools. In just seven years, our program has raised an amazing $53,033.00 for visual arts education. The funds for the award program come from two sources.
* Cash donations from businesses, foundations and individuals such as yourself. (In 2008, $8,888.00 came from these cash contributions.)
* The Chase Away The Blahs Party Artistically, silent and live auctions and a potluck lunch held every January. (The eighth annual event raised $8,127.00 for school children.)
Our partner is the PENCIL Foundation. Because PENCIL is a 501(c)(3) organization, all cash donations are 100 percent tax deductible. PENCIL, beginning in 2005, serves as the fiscal agent, controlling and issuing all funds.
* Cash donations can be made anytime during 2008 or before January 15, 2009.
* Please let us know if you require an invoice for your donation (see contact information above).
* All public school visual art teachers in Davidson and Williamson Counties can submit grant applications.
* A committee of professionals and educators study the grant applications to determine the winners.
* All grant recipients are required to submit a list of expenditures with original receipts for purchases by June 30, 2009. PENCIL will study the expenditures and receipts to ensure that all funds are property spent.
* Every dollar raised has gone to The Students and Friends of gail Mcdaniel Award. Ken and I have always absorbed the administrative costs. We also have received support from Chuck Whiting of Whiting Publicity & Promotions, LeeAnn West-Malm, Graphic Artist, with the donation of their services.
All checks should be made payable to The ‘PENCIL Foundation’ and designated for ‘The Students and Friends of gail Mcdaniel Award’. Please mail your check to:
