A meeting with the Williamson County-Franklin
Chamber of Commerce in September made it apparent to
Steve Keup, the general manager of the Cool Springs
Conference Center and Franklin Marriott, just how important
the state's history and resources are to Tennesseans,
but specifically Williamson Countians.
"Knowing the project's early objective
from the standpoint of it's interiors was to capture
the essence of its location and achieve a level of low-key
formality, regional resourcing was critical," said
Keup in a news release. With the assistance and support
of the Chamber, Marriott Hotel commissioned original
art works from local artists. In the Conference Center,
artwork was commissioned by Design Continuum out of
Atlanta from artists from all over the Middle Tennessee
area.
The largest number of artists from one
gallery that had works commissioned for the Center were
represented by James-Ben Stockton whose gallery is on
Main Street in Franklin. Those artists included Pam
Francis (watercolorist), David Leonard (photographer),
Gail McDaniel (watercolorist) and Tim Wibking (watercolorist).
"We are absolutely ecstatic," said Stockton.
"We have 31 pieces in the Conference Center and
the hotel. This is so important to for us. We're looking
to enlarge the corporate and commercial part of the
gallery."
Stockton expressed how proud he was of
the artists he represents because they were commissioned
to do the works within a two-month time frame and met
the deadline. Gail McDaniel did 18 pieces for this,"
said Stockton. "I mean she stopped everything to
do this project." "The gallery specializes
in artists of regional caliber and this experiment represents
this." McDaniel said she usually doesn't work at
such a rapid pace but was able to pull it off. "I
don't know how I did it," said McDaniel and sighed.
"I dedicated all of my time to painting. Christmas
came and went, and I didn't even notice."
McDaniel painted two flower pieces and
the rest are architectural renderings of well-known
historic homes in the area. "Its really nice that
they are going to have work of local artists hanging
there," said McDaniel. "Tourists and visitors
of Franklin will be able to look at the pictures and
recognize areas they will visit during their stay."
McDaniel has been painting for 15 years and teaches
watercolor classes at Brentwood United Methodist Church.
She generally has about 36 students every month from
all over Middle Tennessee.
"It's a thrill and an honor to have
been picked to do pieces for the Convention Center,"
said Francis. "They only selected a few artists
and I feel fortunate to have been selected." Francis
was commissioned to do paintings of scenes typical of
Williamson County. Most of her work was dedicated to
flowers in the area which included a pair of wildflower
pieces and one of irises. Flowers are one of my favorite
things to paint," said Francis. Francis has been
painting her whole life. Her work covers a wide variety
of painting techniques.
"I take photos all the time,"
said Francis. "You never know what's going to strike
me. Shadows and light are most inspiring to me."
